Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that she will hold a sit-in in Kolkata on Tuesday, alleging that state police is threating Trinamool Congress MLAs.

In a virtual address, Banerjee claimed that four TMC MLAs told her that they had been threatened by the state police.

The TMC supremo also alleged attempts to break her party. She alleged that the police were putting pressure on TMC MLAs to support Ritabrata Banerjee, an expelled party leader and MLA from Uluberia-Purba.

“You cannot weaken TMC by intimidating or bribing a few MLAs and MPs; in fact, this is only making the party stronger…,” the former Bengal CM asserted.

She also claimed that the police were not giving her permission to stage a ‘dharna’ she had planned to hold at 1 pm on Tuesday.

“If you don’t allow me here, I will hold a dharna in Delhi. We also have an INDIA Alliance meeting there,” Mamata said.

She also urged her supporters to join the protest. “I request everyone to come. If they try to arrest me, I will get arrested,” she added.

The development comes a day after 61 of 80 TMC MLAs skipped the Legislative Party meeting in Kolkata.

Their absence forced the TMC to cancel the meeting and sparked concerns of a split in the party that ruled the state for 15 consecutive years.

The legislative party meeting had been called to discuss the CID probe into the alleged forgery of MLAs’ signatures on a letter nominating Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of Opposition in the Bengal Assembly.

Earlier in the day, the TMC expelled two MLAs – Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha – for anti-party activities.

Their expulsion came after Suvendu Adhikari announced at the state secretariat Nabanna that it was Ritabrata and Sandipan who had earlier submitted a written complaint to the Speaker regarding the Assembly signature forgery case.

Based on their complaints, the Assembly Secretariat filed a complaint at the Hare Street Police Station.
